What Does an Elevated PSA Level Mean?

January 14th, 2025

PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a protein produced by the prostate gland, a small gland located just below the bladder in men. A PSA test measures the level of PSA in your blood.

What Does an Elevated PSA Level Mean?

While an elevated PSA level can be a sign of prostate cancer, it’s important to note that it can also be elevated due to other factors, such as:

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): An enlarged prostate gland
  • Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland
  • Recent ejaculation

Therefore, a high PSA level alone is not a definitive diagnosis of prostate cancer. Further testing, such as a prostate biopsy, may be necessary to confirm a diagnosis.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer:

Early-stage prostate cancer often doesn’t cause any noticeable symptoms. However, as the cancer progresses, you may experience:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Weak urine flow
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Pain in the pelvis or back

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult your doctor for further evaluation.

Remember: Early detection is key to successful prostate cancer treatment. Regular check-ups and screenings, including PSA tests, are crucial, especially for men over the age of 50 or those with a family history of prostate cancer.
