PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a protein produced by the prostate gland, a small gland located just below the bladder in men. A PSA test measures the level of PSA in your blood.
What Does an Elevated PSA Level Mean?
While an elevated PSA level can be a sign of prostate cancer, it’s important to note that it can also be elevated due to other factors, such as:
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): An enlarged prostate gland
- Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland
- Recent ejaculation
Therefore, a high PSA level alone is not a definitive diagnosis of prostate cancer. Further testing, such as a prostate biopsy, may be necessary to confirm a diagnosis.
Symptoms of Prostate Cancer:
Early-stage prostate cancer often doesn’t cause any noticeable symptoms. However, as the cancer progresses, you may experience:
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Difficulty urinating
- Weak urine flow
- Blood in urine or semen
- Pain or burning during urination
- Pain in the pelvis or back
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult your doctor for further evaluation.
